"The Old Gray Mare"
The Greatest Trotter in the First Half of the
20th Century
Pictured with her owner, Hiram Woodruff, the world reknowned
Old Gray Mare was bred in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York,
and foaled in 1833. This beautiful gray stood about 15 1/2 hands
high with a large sweeping tail. She competed for 16 years, winning
88 of 161 races. She was the first trotter to go a mile in under
2:30, accomplishing this feat on October 13, 1845, at the Beacon
Course in Hoboken, New Jersey, in a world record time of 2:29
